As we prepare for the upcoming fireworks display, it’s important to remember that the loud bangs and bright lights can be stressful for our furry friends. To help keep our pets safe and calm, we’ve gathered expert advice from Dr. Marlene Tremblay, Director of Veterinary Services, at the Pet Network.

Here are a few simple but effective steps to protect your pets during the festivities:

  1. Keep Pets Indoors
Fireworks can make pets panic, leading them to attempt an escape. Ensure your pets are safely inside the house, away from open windows, doggy doors, or unsecured yards where they could flee.
  2. Provide a Quiet, Safe Space
Create a calm environment for your pet by covering windows to block the flash of fireworks. Playing music or keeping the TV on can help mask the loud noises. Provide toys or chew items to keep them distracted and engaged.
  3. Update Your Pet’s Identification
It’s always a good idea to have your pet wear an ID tag, just in case they escape. For added security, consider microchipping your pet for easier reunification should they get lost. Be sure to update the contact information linked to the microchip as well.
  4. Consult Your Veterinarian for Medication
If your pet is particularly sensitive to noise, consider talking to your vet about medications that can reduce anxiety. Sedatives or anti-anxiety treatments might be recommended to help your pet cope with the stress of fireworks.

By taking these precautions, you can ensure that your pets are as comfortable and safe as possible during the fireworks display. Special thanks to Dr. Tremblay for sharing these invaluable tips. Let’s all work together to keep our pets safe while we celebrate the holiday!
